About Zoo Med
Founded in 1977 by reptile enthusiast Gary Bagnall, Zoo Med Laboratories has grown from a passion project into one of the world's leading manufacturers of reptile, amphibian, aquatic and exotic pet products. Based in San Luis Obispo, California, the company was built on a simple philosophy: create innovative products that improve animal welfare while helping hobbyists recreate natural environments for the animals they care for.
From its earliest days, Zoo Med has been driven by a love of wildlife and a commitment to education. Gary's fascination with reptiles, amphibians and the natural world inspired a company dedicated not only to producing high-quality products, but also to helping keepers better understand the animals in their care. Today, that same passion continues to guide the Zoo Med team as they develop products, create educational resources and support hobbyists around the globe.
Zoo Med is perhaps best known for revolutionising reptile husbandry in 1993 with the introduction of the world's first UVB lamp specifically designed for reptiles. This breakthrough transformed reptile keeping forever, providing captive reptiles with access to essential UVB lighting and helping countless species thrive in captivity. The innovation cemented Zoo Med's reputation as a pioneer within the reptile industry and remains one of the company's most significant achievements.
Today, Zoo Med manufactures more than half of its extensive product range at its California headquarters and holds over 30 patents across reptile, aquatic and exotic pet care. Its portfolio includes habitats, lighting, heating, nutrition, filtration, water care and enrichment products designed to support the health and wellbeing of a wide variety of species. The company remains committed to innovation, with many products developed and tested using the extensive collection of animals cared for at its facilities.
Conservation and education remain at the heart of the Zoo Med philosophy. The company actively supports reptile, turtle, tortoise, amphibian and conservation organisations around the world, regularly donating products and resources to clubs, societies, zoos and wildlife groups. Through initiatives such as Turtle Nirvana, its dedicated turtle and tortoise breeding facility, Zoo Med has successfully bred and hatched numerous rare and endangered species, helping to support both conservation and public awareness.
Nearly five decades after its founding, Zoo Med continues to inspire hobbyists to bring a little piece of nature into their homes. By combining innovation, education and a genuine passion for animals, the company remains one of the most trusted names in exotic pet care and a leader in the global reptile and aquatic industries.
