About Eheim

For more than 75 years, EHEIM has been synonymous with quality, reliability and innovation in the world of aquatics. Founded in 1949 by engineer Gunther Eheim near Stuttgart, Germany, the company began life in remarkably humble surroundings, repairing and manufacturing technical toys from the veranda of his father-in-law's home. From these beginnings, EHEIM would go on to become one of the most influential names in aquarium technology.

The company's breakthrough came from an unexpected source. While developing a miniature fountain for model railway layouts, Gunther Eheim created a compact centrifugal pump with magnetic coupling. The pump was reliable, waterproof and technically advanced for its time. Eheim recognised that the same technology could be combined with a filter container to create a new type of aquarium filtration system.

The result was the EHEIM aquarium suction filter, developed in the early 1960s, with the first filter system entering series production in 1963. This innovation fundamentally changed aquarium keeping, making effective filtration more practical and accessible and helping the ornamental aquarium become a hobby enjoyed by millions of people around the world.

From that point forward, filtration became the foundation of EHEIM's expertise. The company continued to refine and develop its technology, progressing from its early filters to sophisticated external filtration systems, pumps, heating technology and complete solutions for freshwater and marine aquariums. By 1971, more than 100,000 EHEIM aquarium filters were already in use worldwide—a remarkable achievement just eight years after the first system entered production.

EHEIM's ambitions soon expanded beyond aquarium filtration. In 1974, the company entered the garden pond market, developing technology for pond pumps and filtration. Over the following decades, the portfolio grew to include aquarium heaters, air pumps, CO₂ systems, protein skimmers, lighting, food, water care, filter media and a comprehensive range of aquarium accessories. This evolution established EHEIM as a true full-range aquatic specialist.

The development of the EHEIM brand was also strengthened through the integration of other respected German aquatic manufacturers. In 1993, EHEIM acquired Müller & Pfleger (mp), while JÄGER, renowned for its aquarium heating technology, was acquired in 2002. In 2004, EHEIM, mp and JÄGER were brought together within the EHEIM Aquatics Group, combining three established names with strong reputations for German engineering and quality. From 2012, products and services were brought together under the single EHEIM brand.

The philosophy behind EHEIM has always been centred on quality, reliability and longevity. The company's "Made in Germany" approach remains an important part of its identity, with its headquarters and production based in Deizisau near Stuttgart. EHEIM continues to place strong emphasis on controlling its own development and manufacturing processes, helping it maintain the high standards that have defined the brand for generations.

This focus on long-term reliability extends beyond the initial purchase. EHEIM places significant importance on service, spare parts and product longevity, with the company offering a 10-year spare parts service guarantee on its website and manufacturer warranties of up to 36 months on selected products. This approach reflects a philosophy that aquarium equipment should be built to last and supported throughout its working life.

EHEIM has also continued to embrace the changing face of aquarium technology. From energy-efficient LED lighting and advanced electronic heating to digitally controlled equipment and smart aquarium technology, the company continues to develop products that combine traditional German engineering with modern connectivity and convenience. Its recent digital developments include the EHEIM Digital Connect App and the ability to integrate EHEIM Digital products into smart-home systems through an open API.

Today, EHEIM is an internationally recognised aquatic brand with sites across Europe and Asia and products exported to around 70 countries. The company continues to operate from its headquarters in Deizisau, near Stuttgart, and remains known throughout the industry for its commitment to quality, service and innovation.

More than seven decades after Gunther Eheim began repairing technical toys on a small veranda, his legacy can be seen in aquariums around the world. The invention that began with a miniature model railway fountain helped create the foundations of modern aquarium filtration—and EHEIM continues to build upon that legacy today.

A Global Success – Just eight years after the first filter entered production, more than 100,000 EHEIM aquarium filters are already in use around the world. The company's filtration technology has become firmly established as a benchmark within the growing aquarium hobby.

The Aquarium Filter Revolution – After developing a miniature magnetic-coupling centrifugal pump for a model railway fountain, Gunther Eheim adapts the technology for aquarium use. The first EHEIM filter system enters series production, introducing a new era of reliable aquarium filtration and helping make fishkeeping accessible to a much wider audience.

The EHEIM Story Begins – Engineer Gunther Eheim establishes his company near Stuttgart, Germany, initially specialising in the repair and manufacture of technical toys. From these humble beginnings, a business is born that will eventually transform the aquarium industry.
