About Evolution Aqua
Founded in 2001 in Wigan, UK, Evolution Aqua began with a simple ambition: pond filtration could be better. From those beginnings, the company has grown into an award-winning British manufacturer and one of the most recognised names in aquatic filtration, with its products now used by pond keepers, aquarists and aquatic professionals around the world.
Evolution Aqua's roots lie firmly in innovation. One of the company's earliest breakthroughs was The Answer, a self-cleaning mechanical fine-screen filter developed by founder Nick Jackson to tackle the challenge of removing fine solids before they could enter the biological stages of a filtration system. This early innovation helped establish the company's reputation for designing practical solutions to real-world filtration problems.
The company's next major milestone came with the introduction of the Nexus filter, which brought moving bed filtration technology to the koi pond market. Built around K1 Media, the system combined highly effective mechanical and biological filtration in a compact, easy-to-maintain format. The technology helped redefine how koi keepers approached biological filtration and remains a significant part of Evolution Aqua's heritage more than two decades later.
Filtration media has continued to be central to the Evolution Aqua story. Building on the success of K1 Media and its extensive research into moving bed technology, the company has developed a wider portfolio including K1 Micro, K3+ and K+ Media. These products have been engineered to provide large protected surface areas for beneficial bacteria and support the development of stable biological filtration, with K+ Media representing the latest generation of Evolution Aqua's media development.
A key part of Evolution Aqua's success has been its commitment to British manufacturing. Products are designed, developed and manufactured at the company's Wigan facility, where its teams manage everything from product design and research and development through to moulding, extrusion and assembly. Bringing manufacturing processes in-house has allowed Evolution Aqua to maintain greater control over quality while continuing to develop and refine its technology.
Evolution Aqua's expertise now extends far beyond koi pond filtration. Its portfolio includes pond filters, aquarium filtration, UV clarifiers, dechlorinators, filtration media and beneficial bacteria products, alongside solutions for freshwater and marine aquariums, commercial fish systems, aquaculture, swimming pools and public aquariums. The company's PURE range has also become a well-known part of its approach to biological water management, providing beneficial bacteria and enzymes to support healthier, clearer aquatic environments.
Today, Evolution Aqua remains proudly rooted in Wigan, England, operating from a multi-building site that brings together manufacturing, design, assembly and research and development. More than 25 years after the company began, its philosophy remains centred on the same principles that shaped its early success: innovation, British manufacturing and a determination to create better solutions for aquatic filtration and water care.
From the original Answer to the Nexus, K1 Media, K+ Media and the latest generation of filtration technology, Evolution Aqua's story is one of continuous development. By combining decades of filtration expertise with ongoing research and in-house manufacturing, the company continues to help aquatic enthusiasts and professionals around the world achieve cleaner, clearer and healthier water.
