About Tropical Marine Centre (TMC)
Founded in 1970, Tropical Marine Centre (TMC) has grown to become one of Europe's leading suppliers of marine livestock, aquarium equipment and commercial aquatic life support systems. For more than five decades, the company has combined a passion for marine life with a commitment to animal welfare, sustainability and innovation, supplying independent aquatic retailers, public aquariums and commercial facilities around the world.
Headquartered in Chorleywood, Hertfordshire, with a second major livestock and distribution facility in Manchester, TMC operates one of the largest marine livestock networks in Europe. Every week, marine fish, corals and invertebrates arrive from carefully selected ethical collection partners around the world before undergoing rigorous acclimation, health assessments and quality control procedures within TMC's purpose-built holding facilities. This short supply chain allows TMC to deliver healthy, high-quality livestock while maintaining exceptional welfare standards throughout the journey from reef to retailer.
Animal welfare and sustainability have always been central to the company's philosophy. TMC works closely with responsible collectors, conservation organisations and international governing bodies to promote sustainable collection practices and improve welfare standards across the marine aquarium industry. As one of the first UK importers to achieve MAC (Marine Aquarium Council) certification, TMC has long been recognised as a leader in ethical marine livestock sourcing and best practice.
Beyond livestock, Tropical Marine Centre has become a world-renowned manufacturer of advanced aquarium equipment. Its portfolio includes the award-winning REEF range of marine products, AquaRay LED lighting, commercial filtration systems, UV sterilisers and bespoke life support systems used in public aquariums, aquaculture facilities, research laboratories and zoological collections worldwide. Many of these systems have been developed and refined using TMC's own livestock facilities, ensuring they perform to the highest possible standards before reaching customers.
TMC also plays an important role in captive breeding and aquaculture. The company has invested heavily in coral propagation, captive breeding initiatives and sustainable aquaculture projects that help reduce pressure on wild reefs while improving the long-term sustainability of the marine aquarium hobby. Through continued research, technical expertise and close collaboration with breeders around the world, TMC continues to expand the availability of responsibly sourced marine livestock.
Today, more than 50 years after its foundation, Tropical Marine Centre remains one of the most respected names in the marine aquarium industry. Guided by its vision of "Inspiring Synergy Between People and Nature", the company continues to set the benchmark for quality livestock, innovative equipment and responsible marine fishkeeping while supporting retailers, public aquariums and hobbyists across the globe.
